India's PM e-DRIVE scheme is approaching two years of operation, and the government dashboard shows 34.18 lakh EVs registered under it and the earlier EMPS program. Electric two-wheelers account for about 91% of that total, with 31.19 lakh registrations, followed by 2.88 lakh three-wheelers. Official estimates put daily fuel savings at 31.3 lakh litres and daily CO2 reduction at 38.5 lakh kg, roughly what 6.4 crore mature trees would absorb in a day. The scheme, launched October 2024 with Rs 10,900 crore, covers two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, buses, and ambulances. It also funds charging infrastructure. The next milestone is whether the charging network and e-bus or e-truck adoption can grow beyond the current two-wheeler-heavy base, since that mix will determine how much of the projected emissions savings actually materialize.
