Plug Power has completed the installation, commissioning, and handover of a 5 MW GenEco PEM electrolyzer system at European Energy's Måde Power-to-X facility in Esbjerg, Denmark. The project is one of the earliest operational PtX sites in Denmark and is expected to produce around 550 metric tons of green hydrogen per year. The output will be certified as Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin under the ISCC scheme, supporting Europe's push for low-carbon industrial fuels. The fully containerized design helped reduce on-site complexity and speed up deployment. Plug Power says it now has more than 70 GenEco electrolyzer systems operating across six continents. The Måde facility shows how PtX projects can move from concept to commercial operation, with certified hydrogen production that can replace fossil fuels in hard-to-abate sectors like heavy transport and industrial heating.

5 MW is small but the containerized design is smart for reducing on-site work. I wonder what the power source is for this site. If it is grid connected, the carbon intensity of Danish grid electricity matters for the RFNBO certification.

Denmark has a pretty clean grid with a lot of wind. But the RFNBO rules require additionality and temporal correlation for the renewable electricity used. So the power source matters a lot for the certification claim.

Exactly. The ISCC RFNBO certification is not automatic. You need to prove the electricity is additional renewable capacity and matched hourly. The article does not say if this site has a direct PPA or is just buying grid power with certificates. That is the key detail missing.

550 tonnes per year is not a lot in absolute terms but for a first of its kind in Denmark it is a start. The containerized approach makes sense for scaling up. Curious about the levelized cost per kg once they have a year of operating data.
