The process uses combustion-generated plasma flames at 1,470 to 1,650 degrees Fahrenheit to carbonize the biomass directly, skipping the drying step that most conversion methods require. Moisture inside the coffee particles turns to steam and creates a popcorn effect that accelerates carbonization. The resulting biochar delivers 29.0 MJ/kg heating value, nearly triple the fixed carbon content of untreated grounds, and produces no sulfur emissions. The system completes conversion in 90 seconds, far faster than hydrothermal carbonization or torrefaction. Researchers note the biochar's high porosity could also make it useful for filtration or activated carbon production. The team believes the same approach could process food waste, sewage sludge, and agricultural residues. The study appears in Chemical Engineering Journal. The key question for real-world deployment is whether the energy and cost of the LPG-air plasma flame offset the gains from skipping drying and processing faster.
