Pilot Energy (ASX:PGY) plans to turn Cliff Head oil into carbon storage and clean ammonia
kalkinemedia.comPilot Energy (ASX:PGY) is working to convert its mature Cliff Head oil field in Western Australia into a carbon storage and clean ammonia project. The company still produces light sweet crude from Cliff Head and operates the onshore Arrowsmith stabilisation plant, but the long-term value depends on the Mid West Clean Energy Project (MWCEP). That plan ties together carbon injection, ammonia production, and revenue from Australian Carbon Credit Units and industrial abatement fees. Clean ammonia would go to Japanese and South Korean utilities under long-term bilateral contracts. The main hurdles are regulatory and financial: Pilot needs a formal declaration of a greenhouse gas storage formation over Cliff Head, binding joint venture partners, FEED and environmental approvals, and multi-year off-take agreements. Abandonment liabilities for legacy offshore platforms remain a risk if carbon injection approvals are delayed. Investors tracking ASX small caps should watch those milestones.
