Philippines launches MTerra Solar, world's largest solar-plus-battery project, with 3.5 GW solar and 4.5 GWh storage
carboncredits.comThe Philippines has switched on the first phase of the MTerra Solar project, now the world's largest integrated solar and battery storage facility on a single site. Located in Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, Phase 1 delivers 1,373 MW of solar power paired with 825 MW of battery storage holding 3,300 MWh of capacity. The full project will reach 3,500 MWp of solar and 4,500 MWh of storage, enough to power over 2.4 million homes and cut 4.3 million metric tons of CO2 annually. Developed by Meralco PowerGen and Actis, the project addresses the key challenge of solar intermittency by storing excess daytime power for evening use. This helps the Philippines reduce reliance on imported coal and natural gas while working toward its target of 35% renewable electricity by 2030. The battery component is critical for grid stability as the country adds more variable renewable capacity. The project has recorded over 30 million work hours without lost-time injuries and will supply 600 MW of clean power under a long-term agreement with Meralco. It represents one of the largest clean energy investments in the Philippines and a practical example of how solar-plus-storage can replace fossil fuel generation at scale.
