Philippine Forest Carbon Roadmap: CarbonPH Coalition and DENR Plan ASEAN-Ready Registry
cleantechnica.comManila is moving to turn reforestation into tradeable carbon credits. The CarbonPH Coalition and the DENR are building a national registry with satellite monitoring to track forest baselines, map public land, and prevent double counting. The first commercial test is a 40-year Aboitiz Foundation project covering 71,000 hectares of degraded watershed in Cebu, using community nurseries, drones, and satellite data. The Philippines is also an observer in the ASEAN Common Carbon Framework, which wants common trading rules and mutual recognition of credits across Southeast Asia. The main risk is implementation. Past government planting programs lost trees after short funding cycles ended, and buyers are wary after offset market scandals. If the registry and verification work, private capital could flow into long-term watershed restoration. If not, regional buyers will go to Indonesia and Malaysia.
