Philippine cement industry launches decarbonization roadmap with 2050 targets for clinker reduction and alternative fuel use
manilatimes.netThe Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (Cemap) has released a national decarbonization roadmap for the cement and concrete sector. The plan aims to cut clinker use by 58% and increase alternative fuel adoption by 38% by 2050. It also promotes refuse-derived fuels from waste and plastics to reduce coal consumption in cement production. The roadmap was developed with the Department of Trade and Industry, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the Government of Canada. Canada funded the initiative through its Environment and Climate Change department. Cemap says the strategy covers low-carbon cement alternatives, renewable energy, energy efficiency, new supplementary materials, and eventual carbon capture deployment. Cement production is one of the most carbon-intensive industrial processes globally. This roadmap gives the Philippine industry a structured path to cut emissions while continuing to supply materials for infrastructure and housing. The focus on clinker reduction and alternative fuels addresses the two largest sources of emissions in cement manufacturing.
