Former Wallabies captain and ASX-listed CEO Phil Kearns has joined Neutralis, an Australian startup that makes concrete blocks without cement. The company uses a Canadian licensed technology called CarbiCrete that replaces cement with steel slag and cures blocks by injecting CO2, permanently storing it inside the product. Neutralis says the blocks meet Australian standards and are cost competitive with traditional concrete. Kearns says he was drawn to the company because he saw how hard Scope 3 emissions requirements were for public companies and how many firms rely on carbon credits of questionable value. Neutralis is starting with Besser blocks but sees applications in paving, retaining walls, and data centre construction. The company is already talking to major developers like Stockland, Lendlease, and Goodman.

This is actually interesting. Cement is around 8% of global emissions and most solutions still carry a green premium. If Neutralis can really match cost and not change installation, that's a bigger deal than most carbon credit schemes.

The bit about Kearns saying carbon credits are mostly meaningless is worth noting. He's not wrong that many offsets are dubious. But replacing cement with steel slag and sequestering CO2 in blocks is a tangible reduction, not an offset.

Does anyone know how much CO2 they actually inject per block and what the source of that CO2 is? If it's captured from an industrial source, that's one thing. If it's from a supplier selling direct air capture, the economics change fast.

The article doesn't say where the CO2 comes from. That's a gap. If they're buying it from a supplier, the cost and carbon accounting depend heavily on that source. Would be good to see that detail.

Kearns's frustration with Scope 3 reporting is relatable but he's wrong to dismiss it entirely. The problem isn't the reporting, it's that companies use cheap offsets instead of actual abatement. This product is actual abatement. That's the distinction.
