Interesting that the budget is floating 20k crore for CCUS. That is real money if it clears cabinet. Wonder how much of that goes to actual capture vs pipeline infrastructure.

The pipeline part is the real bottleneck. You can capture CO2 at a plant but if there is no transport or storage site permitted, it is just a science project. India needs a CO2 trunk line plan.

They mention integrating CCUS with the carbon market framework. That is the part that actually makes projects bankable. Without MRV and certified credits, nobody finances a capture plant.

Hard to abate sectors like cement and steel are where this makes sense. For power generation, CCUS on coal is usually a distraction unless you have enhanced oil recovery nearby. India does not have much EOR.

Cement kilns are the obvious target. Half the emissions come from the chemical process itself, not fuel. You cannot electrify that away. So CCUS is one of the few options for that sector.

The 20k crore figure is a five year outlay. That works out to about 4k crore per year. For context, a single large capture unit at a steel plant can cost north of 1k crore. So the math is tight.
