Phase Two of Thornton Rail Electrification Starts October 19 with Six-Month Bridge Closure
fife.gov.ukFife Council has announced that phase two of the Thornton rail electrification work will begin on Monday 19 October 2026. The bridge over the railway line will be closed to all traffic for around six months so it can be replaced ahead of line electrification. Local diversions, free shuttle buses, and taxi options for residents with mobility problems are being provided. The work is part of a £311.5m investment to modernise the rail network in Fife, deliver new battery-electric trains, and improve capacity, reliability, and accessibility while cutting carbon emissions. The project timeline includes a full road closure from 19 October, a five-day railway closure for bridge demolition and installation from 24 to 28 October, one lane reopening on 31 March 2027, and completion on 9 July 2027. Network Rail and Fife Council say the schedule was revised to shorten the full closure period and reduce impact on pedestrians, public transport, school routes, and local businesses. More details on diversion routes, shuttle bus timetables, and school bus routes are available on the Scotland's Railway project page.
