A petrochemical plant in Dushanzi, Xinjiang, has transformed barren Gobi Desert land by investing over 3 billion yuan in environmental upgrades since 2015. The facility, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corp, installed laser radar and gas cloud imaging to monitor volatile organic compounds around the clock. It also built a closed-loop wastewater treatment system that recycles water and even supports a koi pond to demonstrate water quality. The plant was named a National Green Factory in March 2026. It cut air pollutants, reduced energy use, and tracks solid waste from generation to disposal. The company says it will continue focusing on green upgrades and high-end new materials while ensuring regional energy supply.

The koi pond as a visual for water quality is a nice touch but I'd like to see the water recycling rate. Closed loop sounds good but how much is actually reused vs discharged.

National Green Factory label is a government designation so take it with a grain of salt. Still, the investment numbers are large enough to suggest real changes on the ground.

Worth noting this is a state owned enterprise. The green push here is partly driven by central government mandates. Would be more interesting to see comparable data from private refiners.
