Brazil's state-controlled energy company Petrobras is testing Cardano blockchain to track environmental benefits from sustainable aviation fuel and prevent double counting. The pilot, developed with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation, uses CS-SAF tokens that can be created, transferred, checked, and retired. Retirement stops the same environmental attribute from being claimed more than once, similar to preventing double spending. The Book-and-Claim model lets an airline, company, or passenger claim the benefit of SAF even when the fuel is produced or used elsewhere. Tokens carry metadata aligned with CORSIA, the international aviation carbon offsetting scheme. The same R&D work proposes a separate Diesel R project to create a continuous fuel lifecycle record for Scope 3 emissions reporting. At this stage, the Foundation has not published transaction volumes or revenue figures, so commercial use remains unquantified. The value is in showing how tokenized carbon attributes could support cleaner accounting if regulators accept the records.
