Petrobras Launches $29 Million Bid for Low-Carbon Hydrogen Electrolyser Technology
upstreamonline.comBrazil's Petrobras has announced a 150 million reais ($29 million) bidding opportunity to develop an industrial-scale electrolyser for low-carbon hydrogen production. The initiative, in partnership with federal agency Finep, aims to reduce external technology dependence and lower hydrogen production costs. The tender requires a minimum 50% local content and seeks innovative stack technology, where the water-to-hydrogen reaction occurs. Petrobras plans to invest $4 billion in research and development through 2030, targeting hydrogen as a key decarbonization lever. The project addresses the high cost of electrolysis, which remains the main barrier to large-scale hydrogen adoption. By funding basic engineering through to a pre-commercial prototype, Petrobras aims to build domestic manufacturing capability and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. This move aligns with broader efforts to decarbonize industrial processes and could influence hydrogen market dynamics in South America.
