Petrobras $1.2 Billion SAF Investment: What It Means for Aviation Fuel Supply and Emissions
ibtimes.sgPetrobras approved a $1.2 billion investment to build a renewable fuels unit at its Cubatao refinery in Brazil. The facility will produce sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel at a capacity of 15,000 barrels per day using technology from Denmark's Topsoe. This is one of Brazil's largest renewable fuel investments by feedstock capacity. Global SAF production currently accounts for less than 1% of jet fuel use. This project adds meaningful supply as airlines face tighter emissions rules under CORSIA and IATA targets. Brazil's existing biofuel infrastructure and port access position it as a potential exporter to European and North American markets. The investment is part of Petrobras' broader $37 billion plan for Sao Paulo state through 2030. Critics note the company continues to expand oil production alongside its renewable fuels push, raising questions about overall alignment with climate goals.
