UK-based PeroCycle is conducting a feasibility study for Jindal Steel Oman to integrate carbon recycling technology at the Duqm low-carbon steel complex. The project aims to capture CO2 emissions and convert them back into carbon monoxide for reuse in the steelmaking process. This circular carbon loop could potentially reduce emissions from integrated steel mills by up to 90 percent. The first phase of the 5 million tonnes per annum steel complex is expected to be commissioned in early 2027.

The tech sounds interesting, but I want to see the energy penalty. Converting CO2 back to CO requires significant heat or electricity. Where is that power coming from in Duqm?
Integrating into existing blast furnaces is the hard part. Most of these studies look great on paper, but the actual plumbing and downtime for installation usually kill the ROI.
This is a classic CCU play. The real question is whether this counts toward national emissions targets or if it is just a process efficiency gain. The accounting rules for recycled carbon are still messy.
