Perennial Study Validates Digital Soil Mapping for Soil Carbon MMRV with Low Uncertainty

The research, published in Nature, tested a full framework aligned with Verra's VT0014 tool and found that uncertainty drops as project size and duration increase. For projects over 50,000 acres, deductions fell under 5%, a big improvement over the 15% or higher deductions many carbon projects currently accept. The study used Perennial's ATLAS-SOC model and nearly 80 environmental covariates to simulate soil carbon changes across different project sizes and timeframes. Results stayed accurate even when the number of soil samples varied widely. This matters because high uncertainty deductions have been a barrier for farmers and project developers looking to earn carbon credits from soil practices. If digital soil mapping can consistently deliver single-digit uncertainty, it could make soil carbon credits more attractive to buyers and cheaper to verify for sellers.
