Attribute agreements are basically the RECs of the fertilizer world. It separates the carbon benefit from the physical molecule. It is a useful tool to bridge the price gap, but the real test is whether this drives actual new capacity or just reshuffles existing low-carbon credits.
Exactly. Low-carbon ammonia needs massive amounts of renewable power. I want to know where the electricity is coming from for these plants. If they are just using grid power with a credit, the actual emissions reduction is minimal.
PepsiCo is trying to hit their scope 3 targets. Fertilizer is one of the hardest parts of the food supply chain to clean up. This is a standard corporate move, but at least it targets ammonia which is a huge emissions driver.
The cost of green ammonia is still way higher than the Haber-Bosch standard. These agreements help the producers get bankable contracts, which is the only way they get the loans to build the actual plants.
