Pennsylvania awards $277,200 to protect 27 acres of Pittsburgh woodland, preserving carbon storage and stormwater benefits
timesofindia.indiatimes.comPennsylvania awarded $277,200 to the Allegheny Land Trust to permanently protect 27 acres of woodland near Pittsburgh as part of the Lowries Run Expansion Project in Ross Township. The grant comes from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Community Conservation Partnership Program. Once acquired, the land will be kept as open green space rather than opened to development. Officials estimate the woodland can absorb about 22.5 million gallons of rainwater a year and sequester roughly 109,125 pounds of carbon annually. Those functions support local stormwater management and help avoid emissions that would come from clearing the site. The project also adds recreational space for nearby communities. Permanent protection means the land keeps providing those benefits over the long term.
