A global group of scientists has identified critical gaps in our understanding of peatland restoration. While rewetting drained bogs is intended to lock away carbon, some evidence suggests this process can trigger the release of methane, a more potent greenhouse gas. Researchers are now prioritizing 50 key questions to determine when damaged peatlands become permanent carbon sources. This effort aims to improve climate models and ensure that nature based solutions actually deliver the emissions reductions they promise.
