United Utilities is restoring 524 hectares of peatland on the West Pennine Moors above Bolton, an area larger than 730 football pitches. The work on Winter Hill and in the Goyt Valley aims to revive bogs that act as natural filters, improving water quality and storing rainwater to slow runoff and reduce flooding downstream. Healthy peatlands also capture carbon from the atmosphere and create diverse habitats for wildlife, making the landscape more resilient to drought. The project is a partnership with Moors for the Future, Lancashire Peat Partnership, RSPB, and Natural England. Over the past five years, United Utilities has restored more than 3,000 hectares of peatland across the North West. By holding water in the landscape longer, these nature based solutions reduce stress on urban drainage systems and improve operational resilience for water infrastructure.

Interesting to see a water utility putting real money into peatland restoration. The carbon capture angle is real but the flood mitigation benefit is probably the bigger near term win for local communities.

Yeah the flood reduction part is tangible. 524 hectares of sponge is meaningful for downstream towns. Would be good to see the cost per hectare compared to engineered flood defenses.

Cost comparison would be useful. Nature based solutions often get funded because they're cheaper than concrete alternatives but the maintenance and land use tradeoffs need to be factored in.

3000 hectares over 5 years is decent scale. Wonder how they verify the carbon capture numbers. Peatland accounting is tricky and the permanence risk from drought or fire is real.

That's the key question. Without proper monitoring and baselines these projects can look better on paper than in practice. The partnership with Natural England should help with methodology.
