PEAT+ Project: €19.2m Peatland Restoration Starts at Peatlands Park, Northern Ireland
armaghnow.co.ukThe €19.2 million PEAT+ project has started restoration work at Peatlands Park in Northern Ireland. Led by Ulster Wildlife and backed by PEACEPLUS cross-border funding, the project will restore around 12,415 hectares of degraded peatland across 22 sites in Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland over the next three years. Peatlands are major carbon stores, but an estimated 80% of Ireland's peatland is degraded and releasing emissions. The project aims to cut those emissions, support biodiversity, improve water quality, and reduce flood risk. It also includes research, an accredited LANTRA training course, and around 40 green jobs. Finance Minister John O'Dowd visited the site to mark the start. Delivery partners include local councils, Atlantic Technological University, Crichton Carbon Centre, and other groups across the region.
