Peak Cluster, a joint initiative from four UK cement firms, has revised the route of its proposed CO2 pipeline that would transport captured carbon to storage under the sea. The updated plans reduce the corridor width from 300 meters to approximately 100 meters following consultations and technical assessments. The £5bn project aims to decarbonize the cement industry, which is notoriously hard to clean up, but faces strong local opposition from residents and some councils. The new route will be subject to six-week consultations in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, and Cheshire in November, with the Wirral leg following in January. More than 5,500 responses were received during the first phase. The project highlights the tension between industrial decarbonization and local environmental impact, and the coming consultations will be a critical test of whether the developer can address safety and disruption concerns while keeping the project on track.
