Peak Cluster carbon pipeline protest: Great Pipeline Walk planned against proposed route

A major demonstration called the Great Pipeline Walk is planned for July 12 against the proposed Peak Cluster carbon capture pipeline in the UK. The pipeline would carry CO2 from cement factories in the Peak District through Cheshire and Wirral to a compression facility near Meols or Moreton, then send it under the sea. Construction could start in 2029 and cost an estimated 5 billion pounds, with the government already committing 28.6 million pounds. Campaigners argue the project would cause irreversible damage to rural areas, threaten farmland and biodiversity, and rely on what they call unproven and high-risk technology. Residents have refused access for surveys and formed united opposition. The walk covers five sections along the route from Hope Valley to Leasowe Lighthouse, with a community picnic planned at the finish. The event is organized by Action Against CCS and aims to raise awareness of the project's scale and ensure local voices are heard. Previous protests have taken place at Wallasey Town Hall and the Floral Pavilion during public consultations. The pipeline could also connect to Essar's Tranmere oil terminal for imported CO2.
