Patagonia Megatransect: Surveying Giant Kelp Forests for Blue Carbon Potential
discoverwildlife.comResearchers are conducting a 1,200km survey of Patagonian kelp forests to map biodiversity and quantify their role as a massive natural carbon sink. The project aims to provide precise data on how these ecosystems regulate climate and support global fisheries. Giant kelp can grow up to 50cm per day, absorbing carbon at rates significantly higher than terrestrial forests. This data is critical for establishing Chile as a leader in blue carbon reservoirs and protecting these habitats from invasive species and environmental degradation.
