Particle Accelerator Sustainability Guidelines: Cutting Energy Use, Embodied Carbon, and Emissions at Major Research Facilities
bioengineer.orgNew sustainability guidelines for major particle accelerator facilities, published in EPJ Research Infrastructures, aim to reduce the large energy and material footprint of big science projects. The framework covers planning, design, construction, operation, and decommissioning, with examples like CERN's annual consumption of up to 1.3 terawatt-hours and the European Spallation Source's projected 270 gigawatt-hour demand. The guidance ranks actions from rethink through recycle and puts direct power reduction ahead of buying green power credits. It targets embodied carbon in concrete and tunnels, high-efficiency RF systems, permanent magnets, flexible computing, and limits on research travel. The authors also call for transparent reporting of absolute emissions and treat offsets as a last resort.
