Paris-Orly reaches top airport carbon accreditation with 92% cut in operational emissions
travelwires.comParis-Orly Airport has reached Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation, the highest level in the programme, after cutting its operational emissions by 92% compared with 2010. The airport hit net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2025, five years ahead of its original 2030 target. The remaining 2,725 tonnes of CO2 equivalent were covered by certified carbon credits. Most of the reduction came from renewable heat. Geothermal production, a heat pump installed in late 2024, recovered waste heat, and biomethane guarantees of origin covered 87% of the airport's heat use in 2025. Groupe ADP also cut electricity use across its facilities by 16% and heat consumption by 35% versus 2019, using measures like 19C heating setpoints, LED lighting, and electric or HVO-powered ground equipment. Scope 3 emissions from flights and construction remain on a 2050 timeline. Next steps include solar power covering about 24% of the three Paris airports' electricity from 2027 and higher recycling rates for runway materials. The accreditation covers only the airport's own operations, not the wider aviation value chain.
