Paracel Forestry Project Verifies First Carbon Credits in Paraguay Under Verra VM0047
carbonherald.comParacel, a large-scale forestry and conservation project in Paraguay backed by commodity trader Trafigura, has verified its first batch of carbon removal credits, totaling over 190,000 tons. The project is among the first to use Verra's updated VM0047 methodology for afforestation and reforestation. With 87,000 hectares planted, it aims to generate over 23 million tons of carbon removals over its lifespan, while dedicating 40% of the project zone to biodiversity conservation and 10% of carbon revenues to community initiatives. The project ties into Paraguay's first pulp mill, using carbon finance to bridge the gap until timber operations mature. It also positions Paraguay for international compliance markets under Article 6, following bilateral agreements with Singapore and the UAE. This milestone highlights how carbon finance can de-risk long-horizon forestry investments and supports the growth of a modern forestry economy.
