Paper Carrier Bag Carbon Footprint: 16.6 to 82.9 g CO2e Per Bag, New European Study Shows
pulpapernews.comNew cradle-to-gate data from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden puts the fossil carbon footprint of paper carrier bags at 16.6 to 82.9 g CO2e per bag. The study, commissioned by The Paper Bag platform, covers three common bag types: a 20 g takeaway bag, a 55 g shopping bag with twisted handles, and a 100 g shopping bag with flat handles. Paper production accounts for about 67% of the footprint. The numbers are meant to give retailers and brand owners a baseline for packaging choices, but the scope has limits. It only covers emissions up to the factory gate, excludes bags with high recycled content, and does not compare paper bags with plastic or reusable alternatives. The car travel equivalences based on German 2024 data help put the figures in perspective. Retailers comparing packaging options should treat this as a solid starting point, not a full life cycle answer. The methodology is transparent enough to check, and the bag weight and mill energy mix will drive most of the variation.
