The Wildlife Trust is trialing paludiculture in Greater Manchester to restore drained peatlands. By re-wetting these soils, the project aims to stop the oxidation of peat and reduce the 3 percent of UK greenhouse gas emissions caused by drained lowland agricultural peat. Trials at the Chat Moss site are testing the viability of crops like kale, blueberries, and radishes in wet conditions. The goal is to find a sustainable farming model that protects soil carbon without compromising farmer livelihoods or food security.
