Pakistan has become the third country to join the Apparel & Textile Transformation Initiative (ATTI), a manufacturer-led climate program aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the global textile and apparel industry. The Pakistan Readymade Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA), representing over 500 member companies, signed an MoU with ATTI to establish a national chapter. ATTI will help assess industry needs, develop practical decarbonization solutions, and create a roadmap for the sector. Pakistan's textile sector is the country's second-largest industrial source of greenhouse gas emissions after cement, producing between 5% and 9% of total national emissions. This equals about 8.1 million tons of carbon per year. ATTI, launched in June 2025 by the International Apparel Federation, aims to give manufacturers a stronger voice and reduce fragmented sustainability efforts. The initiative already includes Bangladesh and Turkiye.

Agreed. The key will be whether PRGMEA can get its 500+ members to adopt real changes. Roadmaps are easy. Retrofitting mills and switching fuel sources is the hard part.

Industrial heat is the elephant here. Textile mills need high temp steam. Electrification at scale needs cheap power and equipment. Payback periods will decide if this works.
