Paiton Energy eyes 2.6 GW hydrogen-capable gas plant with Mitsubishi Power to cut emissions
indonesiabusinesspost.comPaiton Energy, an Indonesian power producer, is in talks with Mitsubishi Power to build a 2.6 GW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant that can run on hydrogen blends. The company currently operates 2.04 GW of coal capacity in East Java and wants to cut its fleet's carbon intensity by about 34% from the current 913 gCO2/kWh. The project is part of a 2025-2060 roadmap that treats gas as a bridge fuel, with plans for hydrogen and ammonia co-firing by 2030 and a 1 GW carbon capture pilot. Mitsubishi's JAC-series turbines can already handle up to 30% hydrogen, and the company claims high efficiency and reliability. However, questions remain about the source of hydrogen and whether it will be low-carbon from the start. The plan also includes solar and battery storage to complement the gas units, but timelines for scaling up to 100% hydrogen or ammonia are still distant.
