PacificLight Power starts building 670MW gas plant with 80MW battery storage in Singapore
straitstimes.comPacificLight Power has broken ground on a new gas-fired power plant on Jurong Island, which will be Singapore's first to pair a battery storage system with a gas turbine. The 670MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility, costing $1.2 billion, is expected to start operations in 2029. An 80MW battery will help manage grid stability and allow the plant to respond to contingencies within two seconds, supporting Singapore's growing solar deployment. The plant is also designed to burn a fuel mix containing up to 30% hydrogen, with plans to eventually run on 100% hydrogen as costs and infrastructure improve. This move comes as Singapore faces rising electricity demand driven by AI, advanced manufacturing, and transport electrification. The project increases PacificLight's generation capacity by 70% and is part of a broader push to secure energy while working toward lower-carbon generation.
