Ozinga opens low-carbon slag cement plant in East Chicago, Indiana
nwindianabusiness.comOzinga has opened a low-carbon cement manufacturing facility in East Chicago, Indiana. The plant will produce 1 million tons of slag cement per year using recycled slag from a nearby steel mill. The company says the process cuts the carbon footprint of cement by 80% and will offset more than 700,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. Traditional cement production accounts for nearly 7% of global CO2 emissions. With about 22% of US cement imported in 2024, the new domestic facility also addresses supply chain concerns. Ozinga plans to reach net zero concrete by 2030 and will ship materials by rail, truck, and water to customers across the US and Canada.
