Oyster Reef Restoration Could Deliver $12 Trillion in Ecosystem Benefits, New Study Finds
scitechdaily.comA study in Frontiers in Marine Science maps where oyster reefs could recover along coastlines and puts the potential ecosystem value at $12 trillion across the ten highest opportunity countries. Researchers used gross ecosystem product to count services like water filtration, nitrogen removal, coastal protection, and carbon storage. They estimate fully restored reefs could filter 77.58 quadrillion liters of water in the US alone and sequester about 12.3 million metric tons of carbon each year. Most suitable habitat is not protected, with only 23% inside marine protected areas. The authors say 90% of suitable sites need restoration and 80% need protection. The $12 trillion figure comes from global averages, so real project outcomes will depend on local conditions. Still, the study gives coastal planners and blue carbon project developers a clearer picture of where restoration could have the largest impact.
