The Oyo State Government has launched a Climate Literacy and Awareness Programme in partnership with the Global Impact Sustainable Development Enterprise, the University of the West of England, and the Carbon Literacy Project. Over 300 teachers are being trained to integrate climate education into classrooms, even though it is not yet a standalone subject. Participants who complete the training and develop climate action plans will receive internationally recognized Carbon Literacy certificates. The programme is part of a five-year continental initiative aiming to train 7,000 learners across Africa by 2030. The state's environment commissioner highlighted that climate change extends beyond flooding to include heatwaves, land degradation, and food insecurity. Teachers are seen as key influencers to drive behavioral change among students and communities. Oyo State is the first Nigerian state to adopt this initiative, which includes four training cohorts over eight days. The government has also strengthened environmental enforcement and introduced a whistleblower mechanism for reporting violations. The programme reflects a practical step toward building climate awareness at the grassroots level through education.
