Oxfordshire road resurfacing pilot uses low-carbon materials to cut 30 tonnes of carbon
oxfordmail.co.ukOxfordshire County Council and M Group are trialing a package of low-carbon innovations on the B4445 in Chinnor. The pilot replaces the traditional asphalt binder with Breedon's ACLA Net Zero binder, uses Shell's Cariphalte polymer-modified bitumen, and includes cold-applied MMA road markings, solar-powered welfare cabins, and electric plant machinery. The project expects to cut over 30 tonnes of carbon emissions, with the largest savings from the new binder. The scheme runs under a full road closure in three phases and includes drainage improvements and biodiversity enhancements. The real goal is to evaluate how these technologies perform together in real-world conditions, so future highway maintenance across the industry can adopt lower-carbon approaches. The trial also tests durability and future maintenance needs, which will determine if these materials offer long-term environmental and cost benefits.
