Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) reduced its carbon emissions by more than 20 percent over three years, dropping from 47,349 tonnes of CO2e in 2022/23 to 37,419 tonnes in 2025/26. The cuts came from changes in clinical practice, infrastructure upgrades, and staff actions. Anaesthetic gas emissions fell by 40 percent, patient inhaler emissions dropped as clinicians switched patients to lower carbon options, and virtual meetings eliminated about 215,000 car miles from business travel. Fossil fuel emissions also fell from 26,839 to 19,671 tonnes of CO2e. The trust is working toward net zero by 2040. It also improved water emissions monitoring with better leak detection systems, which caused reported water emissions to rise due to more accurate data. The story shows how a large public institution can cut operational carbon through a mix of clinical changes, travel reduction, and infrastructure work. It is a concrete example of decarbonization in the healthcare sector.
