Oxford hospitals cut carbon emissions by switching anaesthetic gas delivery to portable cylinders

Oxford University Hospitals have reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by switching from a piped manifold system for nitrous oxide to portable cylinders. The change across four hospitals including the John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospital saves an estimated 721 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year. That is roughly equal to driving two million miles in a typical petrol car. The new system also reduces leak risk and maintenance time compared to the old piped network. The shift started at Horton General Hospital in 2024 and was led by anaesthetic consultant Dr. Soren Kudsk-Iversen. The project was supported by the Greener NHS Nitrous Waste Mitigation Team. Portable cylinders deliver the gas directly to anaesthetic machines, cutting waste and eliminating the need for large onsite gas stores. The trust says patient care was not compromised during the transition.

721 tonnes is real but small relative to a hospital's total footprint. Still, the leak reduction from manifold systems is a known issue. Good to see OUH actually audit and act on it.

The 721 tCO2e number is based on estimated savings from switching delivery method. I would want to see actual metered data before and after. Manifold leaks are real but the estimate could be optimistic.

Worth noting the Greener NHS Nitrous Waste Mitigation Team helped fund or support this. That program has been pushing similar switches across UK hospitals. Not a one off.
