Oxford City Council cuts its own carbon emissions 8% in a year, but reporting changes explain part of the drop
thisisoxfordshire.co.ukOxford City Council cut its own carbon emissions by 8% in 2024/25, bringing total emissions to 5,088 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. That is 31% below the 2019/20 baseline. The council says LED lighting, solar panels, heat pump improvements, and more efficient showers in leisure centres helped deliver around £100,000 in annual energy savings and roughly 150 tonnes of avoided emissions per year. Part of the year-on-year drop comes from a reporting change. Temporary accommodation and vacant corporate buildings were excluded from the boundary after advice from local government advisors, so the 8% figure is not purely from operational cuts. The council is still studying heat decarbonisation for depots, community centres, and sports pavilions, and is exploring a city centre heat network with partners. Oxford has a city-wide net zero target of 2040, with Oxfordshire set for 2050. Council operations account for about 1% of Oxford's emissions.
