Oxford City Council cuts carbon emissions 8% in a year, now 31% below 2019/20 baseline
oxfordmail.co.ukOxford City Council cut its own carbon emissions by 8% in 2024/25, bringing the total to 5,088 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. That puts the authority 31% below its 2019/20 baseline. The council says the drop came from continued investment in LED lighting, solar panels, heat pump improvements, and energy-efficient showers in leisure centres, with those measures saving roughly £100,000 a year in energy costs. Part of the year-on-year decrease comes from a change in how emissions are reported. Some sites, including temporary accommodation and vacant corporate buildings, were excluded after advice from third-party local government advisors. That makes direct comparison with previous years less straightforward. The council is also exploring a city centre heat network and plans heat decarbonisation studies for depots, community centres, and sports pavilions in 2026/27. Council emissions account for about 1% of Oxford's total. The bigger test is the Zero Carbon Oxfordshire Partnership, which is working toward net zero for the city by 2040 and the county by 2050.
