Outokumpu's EvoMaterials targets low-carbon chromium and ferrochrome, pilot plant planned for 2027
news.metal.comOutokumpu introduced EvoMaterials, a process platform aimed at producing high-purity metals with lower carbon emissions. The first products are enriched ferrochrome and chromium metal from the company's Kemi mine in Finland, with a focus on building a Western supply chain for aerospace and defense buyers. The process uses sulfidation technology, and Outokumpu says modelling points to potential cost competitiveness against conventional routes. The plan moves from lab scale to a one-tonne pilot plant in Londonderry, New Hampshire, scheduled to start up in the first half of 2027. Outokumpu is evaluating locations in the US and Europe for industrial-scale plants, with a 2030 target. The platform may later expand to nickel, molybdenum, specialty alloys, and recovery of metals from side streams.
