OurCoop has opened its sustainability playbook to fellow co-operatives during Co-op Fortnight 2026, sharing best practices for cutting carbon emissions from retail operations. The society has prevented over 6,000 tonnes of CO2 through global carbon reduction projects and planted nearly 300,000 trees with climate action platform Ecologi. Its Broadband, Mobile and Travel businesses help customers offset carbon emissions, funding tree planting and carbon prevention projects in Mexico, Thailand, South Africa and Vietnam. Additionally, nearly 20,000 trees are planted annually through the Funeral Planting Promise in Malawi, restoring forests and providing sustainable income for local communities. Across its direct operations, OurCoop has implemented energy efficiency measures including technology to optimize refrigeration and heating and cooling systems in over 200 food stores in partnership with LoweConex. The society hosted an inspiration session at LoweConex offices in Gloucestershire during Co-op Fortnight to share these insights with other UK co-operatives. Mike Pickering, Head of Sustainability at OurCoop, emphasized that sharing best practice can have an even bigger impact on carbon emissions while reducing energy use and costs.

The tree planting in Malawi through the Funeral Planting Promise is interesting. 20k trees a year is modest but the local benefits like fruit and timber for communities add real value. The carbon offset claims through Ecologi need more transparency on methodology though. 6,000 tonnes prevented over what timeframe?

The LoweConex partnership for refrigeration and HVAC optimization in 200 stores is the most concrete part here. That is where the actual energy savings happen. Would like to see the kWh reduction numbers and payback period. Offsets are fine but efficiency cuts are harder to claim and more valuable.

Co-op Fortnight theme is cooperate and we can change the world. OurCoop sharing their LoweConex refrigeration optimization playbook with other societies is a good example of that. The real test is whether other co-ops actually adopt the tech and see similar savings. Would be interesting to see a follow up on adoption rates.

The carbon offset claims through Ecologi need more scrutiny. 6,000 tonnes prevented is a number but without methodology details it is hard to verify. The tree planting in Malawi sounds like a co-benefit story which is fine but the carbon accounting there is tricky. The refrigeration efficiency work is the more defensible part of their strategy.

Refrigeration and HVAC optimization in 200 stores is where the real savings are. LoweConex automation and remote monitoring can cut energy use significantly. The payback period on that kind of retrofit is usually under 3 years for grocery stores. Sharing that playbook with other co-ops is smart. Would be useful to see the actual kWh reduction per store.
