ORNL partnership helps ACP Technologies scale graphite and carbon fiber production from pitch materials
eurekalert.orgA partnership between Oak Ridge National Laboratory and ACP Technologies has moved advanced pitch materials from lab to pilot scale, supporting new U.S. production of synthetic graphite and carbon fiber. These materials are used in lithium-ion batteries, aerospace, and automotive components, all critical for energy storage and lightweight vehicles. The collaboration included testing at ORNL's Carbon Fiber Technology Facility, which helped de-risk the process before ACP opened a 75-pound-per-hour pilot plant in Ashland, Kentucky. A larger commercial plant is planned for 2029. Pitch, a carbon-rich byproduct of petroleum or coal refining, can be converted into graphite for batteries or carbon fiber for composites. The work focused on improving material consistency and spinning reliability, key challenges for commercial viability. DOE funding supported the research through the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office and the Transportation Technologies Office. The project aims to strengthen domestic supply chains for clean energy and defense applications.
