Specialty chemicals firm Orion S.A. has begun producing circular carbon black at its ISCC PLUS-certified plant in Qingdao, China. The facility is manufacturing three grades of Ecorax Circular carbon black (200, 210, and 215) using tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) as feedstock. Ecorax 200 is a hard black grade suited for tyres, while the 210 and 215 grades can be used in both tyres and mechanical rubber goods (MRG). This move marks a step toward circularity in the carbon black industry, which traditionally relies on fossil fuel feedstocks. By using oil recovered from end-of-life tyres, Orion is closing the loop on tyre materials. The ISCC PLUS certification ensures the feedstock and production process meet sustainability standards. The full article is behind a paywall, but the key takeaway is that commercial-scale circular carbon black production is now underway in China.
