Origins CCS Hub Breaks Ground Near Clive: Alberta's Largest Carbon Capture Project
centralalbertaonline.comEnhance Energy has started construction on the Origins Carbon Capture and Storage Hub near Clive, Alberta. The project aims to be Canada's largest CCS site, with an initial capacity to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Captured CO2 will come from heavy industrial sources in Alberta's Industrial Heartland, including the Northwest Redwater Sturgeon Refinery and Nutrien Redwater, and will be piped to the hub for injection into depleted oil and gas reservoirs for permanent storage. The project is supported by two $5 million grants from Natural Resources Canada's Energy Innovation Program and has been approved as a carbon sequestration hub by the Alberta government. Commercial operations are expected to begin in January 2027. Enhance Energy's existing Clive facility has already stored over nine million tonnes of CO2, generating $800 million in carbon credit value and $586 million in economic activity for the region.
