Oil and gas company Orcadian has proposed a concept to develop the Earlham and Orwell gas fields using an offshore power station with integrated carbon capture. The low-carbon power would run a co-located 200MW offshore data centre, with plans to scale to over a gigawatt. The high CO2 content of the gas makes pipeline export unattractive, so generating power onsite and reinjecting captured CO2 into the reservoir is presented as the optimal monetization route. The company claims the approach needs no government subsidy and avoids grid connection costs. Benefits cited include remote location, natural cooling from the sea, and reduced pressure on the national grid. Orcadian estimates the Earlham field holds 114 billion cubic feet of methane, with Orwell adding 31 billion cubic feet. The cooling advantage is real. Offshore data centres can use seawater directly, cutting energy use for cooling by a lot. But the power source is still gas. If CCS works well here, it could be a bridge, but it is not zero carbon.
