Oracle commits $300M to Point Beach nuclear plant to offset Wisconsin energy costs
interestingengineering.comOracle has agreed to absorb roughly $300 million in rising energy costs tied to the Point Beach Nuclear Plant in Wisconsin. The company says the move will protect more than 1 million utility customers from fuel price increases while supporting the state's only operating nuclear plant. The arrangement still needs approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. It comes after We Energies signed a 20 year power purchase agreement with Point Beach, which generates electricity that is considered particularly expensive. Oracle is also developing a large data center project called Project Lighthouse in Port Washington and says it will fully fund that project's energy costs. A draft PSC report projects Wisconsin peak electricity demand could rise 40 percent over the next five years, driven largely by new data centers. If approved, the Oracle subscription would put the tech company directly into the nuclear plant's power arrangement as the state prepares for that load growth.
