Oracle AI Data Center Growth: Project Jupiter, Water Use, and Rising Scope 3 Emissions
carboncredits.comOracle's fiscal Q1 2027 results show cloud infrastructure revenue up 121% to $7.4 billion, but the AI boom is also pushing up emissions. Scope 3 emissions jumped from 2.69 million to 8.53 million metric tons, mostly from capital goods. The company is trying to offset that with a net-zero plan and a goal of cutting emissions per megawatt of IT capacity by 20% by 2030. Project Jupiter, a 1,400-acre data center campus in New Mexico, is a key test. Oracle is using Bloom Energy fuel cells instead of gas turbines, plans to use non-potable water, and has an RFP for 2 GW of new renewable power. The company also says it will conserve 21 million gallons of water annually via an irrigation partnership with Arable, more than 20 times the site's estimated use. Investors watching ORCL should pay attention to how the company manages energy and water as it scales. The backlog is $664 billion, but negative free cash flow of $5 billion in the quarter shows the cost of expansion. Sustainability metrics like emissions intensity and water use per megawatt will become more important as AI demand keeps growing.
