OQ Group's Green Initiative, launched in 2021 with Oman's Ministry of Agriculture, has distributed more than 274,000 fruit and wild tree seedlings across the country. The project aims to expand green areas, support local food production, and reduce carbon emissions. Officials estimate the trees will absorb roughly 8,000 tonnes of CO2 per year once mature. The initiative also supports farmers and small businesses. Over 169,000 seedlings went to commercial fields, 16,000 to individual farmers, and the rest to investors and government institutions. The expected fruit yield is over 10,000 tonnes with a market value above OMR4.3 million. The project also awarded more than 60 contracts to local SMEs, adding an economic layer to the environmental work.

274k seedlings is a decent number for a single corporate initiative. The 8,000 tonnes CO2 per year claim is the headline number here. Would be good to know what baseline they used for that estimate.

Yeah the CO2 absorption figure is the part that needs more detail. 8,000 tonnes from 274k trees works out to about 29 kg per tree per year. That is in the ballpark for young fruit trees but depends heavily on species and survival rate.

The economic side is interesting. 10,000 tonnes of fruit with a market value of OMR4.3 million. That is about OMR430 per tonne. Not huge but for a small country it adds up. The 60 SME contracts worth OMR346k is a nice local multiplier.

The article says the trees will absorb 8,000 tonnes CO2 per year. But that is an estimate. No mention of monitoring or verification. For carbon accounting purposes that matters. Still a solid initiative for a national program.
