Opportunity Party proposes methane cap-and-trade for NZ farmers and $5B climate resilience fund
farmersweekly.co.nzNew Zealand's Opportunity Party has released a climate policy that would explore a methane cap-and-trade scheme for agriculture, alongside a $5 billion resilience fund and a $1 billion transition fund for industrial gas and coal users. The party says the methane market design would be worked through with farmers, processors, and experts, and would likely include allocations to existing emitters while preventing credit banking or trading into the main ETS. The policy also proposes tax write-offs for home and business energy upgrades, low-interest green loans through councils, and changes to the ETS to favor direct emissions cuts over forestry offsets. The proposal comes after the current government weakened methane targets and ruled out a methane tax. Labour has also ruled one out. Opportunity is the only major party currently proposing a market-based approach to agricultural methane.
